Chapter Eight

Harper

I was annoyed I’d fallen asleep, but grateful Elias hadn’t let me nap for too long. When we got up, we took turns taking a shower in the small bathroom then got ready to head over to Patrick’s house for our stakeout. Elias said he had no plans to make a move on Patrick right away. He wanted to observe him first to try to find out more information about his operation. The most important thing was discovering where Patrick got the girls.

I’d been frustrated at first, because I was desperate to get that motherfucker once and for all, but I understood the need to hold off. I hated the idea that what had happened to my sister could be happening to other young women at that very moment. If there was anything I could have done to save even a handful of girls like Holly then I would have accomplished something good—something important.

Or rather, we would have achieved it.

Together.

I wasn’t sure how I felt about what had happened between Elias and me. It had been so unexpected, but also somehow, not. I’d found him attractive from the moment I first met him, and though I’d never been the type of woman to jump into bed with just anyone, with him, I hadn’t been able to help myself.

Elias certainly hadn’t treated me any differently since he’d woken me up and there was no awkwardness between us, however I wasn’t sure if we were supposed to talk about what it had meant, or just pretend it hadn’t happened at all.

Honestly, I didn’t want to do either.

I didn’t want to talk about it because I had no idea what I would have said to him. Was I looking for a long-term, meaningful relationship? Before I’d met Elias the answer to that question would have been a resounding no, but now, I wasn’t so sure.

Despite what Elias did for a living, and the fact that he could undoubtedly be a very dangerous man, I was drawn to him like a bee to honey. One thing was for sure—I wanted to get to know him better and I wanted him to know me, too.

Did that make me crazy?

After getting dressed, I was just tucking the gun I’d bought into the waistband of my jeans when Elias caught sight of it.

“What the hell is that?” he asked, crossing the room quickly before taking the gun out of my hand.

“What does it look like?”

He turned the gun over in his hand, his eyes narrowed. He glanced at me then back at the gun. “Is this registered to you?”

I rolled my eyes. “Oh, for goodness sake. Give me some credit, would you? Of course it’s not.”

He seemed to relax his expression for a moment, but then narrowed his eyes again. “Where did you get it?”

I shrugged. “Just from a couple of gangbangers.”

“Gangbangers who could identify you?”

I rolled my eyes again. “I’m pretty sure the gun wasn’t registered to them either so how would anyone know to speak to them?”

He shot me a disapproving look.
